PROPOSAL: EXPLORATION21
Exploration21: The Next Level
Exploration21 was developed at the request of high schools that enroll a significant number of students coming from PreK-8 schools that use the LabLearner STEM system. Although we originally developed Exploration21 for ninth graders, principals and teachers have requested using this hands-on curriculum as enrichment in LabLearner middle schools.
The cross-disciplinary nature of Exploration21 (more below), combined with its use of wireless digital probes, data collection, and analytic tools makes it a cutting-edge option for schools serious about reaching the highest levels of STEM education.
Exploration21 blends science, mathematics, technology, and engineering skills into a stimulating experience for students and teachers alike. At the same time, Exploration21 directly addresses the new NY State P-12 Science Standards and guides students to the head of the curve. Simply put, Exploration21 raises the bar and Exploration21 students hurdle ahead of their peers in traditional, book-based science curricula.
Exploration21:
- Middle school STEM enrichment
- After school enrichment
- Summer school/summer camp enrichment and revenue
- Telecommunication partnerships between Exploration21 LabLearner Connect schools across the Diocese and beyond.
Sectors: Immersive and Relevant Content
Sectors in the Exploration21 curriculum are the equivalent of a unit in other science curricula except they go into much greater detail and are more cross-disciplinary. Students work in cooperative groups and use laptop computers or Chromebooks to digitally record all of the data they collect in this 100% hands-on curriculum. Students use wireless probes to collect and analyze data, and to report their work to their teacher.
The Sectors challenge students to solve problems of experimental design and setup while covering NY State P-12 Science Standards.
Action and Learning Combined
Another way in which Exploration21 Sectors are different from typical science units is in the cross-disciplinary nature of the scientific content. This section shows some of the content included in the International Motorcar Sector.
For example, in Exploration21, gas pressure and gas laws are studied not only in terms of their application to force generation in the power stroke in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, but the very same physics principles are also applied to the inhalation and exhalation of air into and out of the human lung.
The video to the right shows scenes from an Exploration21 classroom. Near the end of the video there is a list of the scientific topics included in the International Motorcars Sector. By learning the broad applications of various biological, physical, and chemical factors, students are able to truly understand how the world around them is made of interconnecting components and phenomena. This approach is more stimulating, thought-provoking, and fun!
